Here’s what it actually is, why it’s so easy to miss, and how somatic therapy helps. --- From the outside, you’re doing well. You show up, you deliver, people describe you as capable, put-together, someone who has it handled. From the inside, there’s a low hum of alarm that never fully turns off, a running list of everything that could still go wrong, a body that stays braced even when nothing is actively happening. Both of those things are true at once. That’s high-functioning anxiety. **High-functioning anxiety isn’t a milder version of anxiety. It’s the same intensity, just aimed at staying invisible.** It isn’t a formal clinical diagnosis. It’s a pattern: anxiety that coexists with real competence and real achievement, often powering that achievement, while going largely unnamed because the person carrying it is still functioning. ### Why It’s So Easy to Miss, Including by You Productivity is excellent camouflage. If your anxiety shows up as overpreparing, overworking, and overdelivering, the people around you see the results, not the cost of producing them. Many high-functioning anxious people don’t recognize it in themselves either, because the culture around them treats the symptoms, the drive, the vigilance, the inability to relax, as virtues rather than as signs something is running too hot. **The fact that you’re still functioning doesn’t mean you’re not struggling. It means you’ve gotten very good at hiding it, sometimes even from yourself.** ### What It Actually Feels Like High-functioning anxiety tends to show up as a specific cluster of experiences: overpreparing for things that don’t require it, replaying conversations afterward looking for what you got wrong, a body that stays tense even in supposedly restful moments, difficulty accepting praise because you’re already scanning for the next thing to worry about, and a persistent sense that you’re one mistake away from everything falling apart, no matter how much evidence suggests otherwise. ### Why Talk Therapy Alone Often Isn’t Enough This is where high-functioning anxiety gets stubborn. You can understand, intellectually, that your fears are disproportionate to the actual risk. That understanding rarely quiets the alarm, because [anxiety is a nervous system problem before it’s a thinking problem](/blog/why-anxiety-is-a-nervous-system-problem/). Your body learned, at some point, that staying alert and staying ahead of every possible failure was necessary for safety. Talking about that pattern helps you understand it. It doesn’t, on its own, teach your nervous system it can stand down. ### What Actually Helps Destany’s approach to [anxiety and overthinking](/services/anxiety-overthinking/) works somatically, engaging breath, posture, and nervous system awareness directly, alongside [EMDR](/services/emdr-therapy/) to reprocess the experiences and beliefs that taught your body to stay this vigilant in the first place. As a Registered Dance/Movement Therapist and EMDR-trained Licensed Professional Counselor, she works with clients who’ve often already tried talk therapy and found it helped them understand their anxiety without changing how it felt. **You don’t have to be in crisis for this to be worth addressing.** Looking fine on paper isn’t the same as being okay, and you don’t need permission to want that gap to close. If This Sounds Familiar You don’t need to wait until things get worse to ask for support. If you’re still functioning but quietly running on empty, that’s reason enough.
